If I was in a small boat near a shipping lane at night, I would be very concerned that I would not be seen, by a merchant ship in particular, due to the light pollution that now exists from the mirriad of light emitting screens today (and poor management of white light). I would most certainly install a basic AIS unit as at least a triangle will come up on some screen, maybe even an alatm to warn of my presence.
Lack of ‘night vision’, or the loss of it is a real and present danger.
